If I am to snap some pictures after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4sdWO1C4KOg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">my LED growth lights<\/a> are switched off, I will definitely get pitch black images.<\/p>\n<p>So what kind of camera should my plant surveillance setup use? In order to capture images in the dark, I should look for a camera without the Infrared Filter - a NoIR Camera.<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, I head over to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seeed Studio<\/a> and got myself the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/Raspberry-Pi-Infrared-Camera-Module-p-2773.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since Seeed Studio had provided me with a voucher for this purchase, I am able to minimize the cost of producing this article. <\/p>\n<p>Thank you Seeed Studio!<\/p>\n<p>Given that, let's see how we can capture images in the dark with the Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module.<\/p>\n<h2>Unboxing the Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module<\/h2>\n<p>The Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module came in a white box.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Seeed-Studio-Raspberry-Pi-Infrared-Camera-Module-received-20191007.jpg\" alt=\"Seeed Studio Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module received 20191007\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1781\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Inside the box, the Infrared camera is placed in an antistatic pack and the 2 IR LED bulbs are placed in another.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Contents-of-Seeed-Studio-Raspberry-Pi-Infrared-Camera-Module-received-20191007-in-antistatic-bag.jpg\" alt=\"Contents of Seeed Studio Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module received 20191007 in antistatic bag\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1782\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Contents-of-Seeed-Studio-Raspberry-Pi-Infrared-Camera-Module-received-20191007-out-of-antistatic-bag.jpg\" alt=\"Contents of Seeed Studio Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module received 20191007 out of antistatic bag\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1783\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The camera also came with a cap.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Seeed-Studio-Raspberry-Pi-Infrared-Camera-Module-without-cap-on.jpg\" alt=\"Seeed Studio Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module without cap on\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1784\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Parts to expect<\/h3>\n<p>If you are getting this camera, then you should expect the following parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>RPi Camera (F) \u00d7 1<\/li>\n<li>Infrared LED Board (B) \u00d7 2<\/li>\n<li>15-pin FFC (opposite sides contact) \u00d7 1<\/li>\n<li>screw and nuts to attach Infrared LED Board to RPi Camera x 5<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key features of this camera module<\/h3>\n<p>The key features of thie camera module are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Raspberry Pi Night Vision Camera which supports all revisions of Raspberry Pi<\/li>\n<li>5 megapixel OV5647 sensor<\/li>\n<li><strong>Camera specifications:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>CCD size : 1\/4inch<\/li>\n<li>Aperture (F) : 1.8<\/li>\n<li>Focal Length : 3.6MM (adjustable)<\/li>\n<li>Diagonal : 75.7 degree<\/li>\n<li>Sensor best resolution : 1080p<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>4 screw holes used for attachment<\/li>\n<li>Provides 3.3V power output<\/li>\n<li>Supports connecting infrared LED and\/or fill flash LED<\/li>\n<li>Dimension : 25mm x 24mm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Assembling the IR LED Board to the camera module<\/h2>\n<p>After checking that you have all the required parts, proceed to attach the IR LED bulbs to the camera module. <\/p>\n<p>Simply fasten the 4 nuts and screws like this:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/back-view-of-Raspberry-Pi-Infrared-Camera-Module-attached-to-the-IR-LED-bulbs.jpg\" alt=\"back view of Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module attached to the IR LED bulbs\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1785\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/front-view-of-Raspberry-Pi-Infrared-Camera-Module-attached-to-the-IR-LED-bulbs.jpg\" alt=\"front view of Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module attached to the IR LED bulbs\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1786\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since there are conductors on the IR LED bulbs and Camera Module where the screws are, the IR LED bulbs will be able to draw power when the Camera Module is connected to the Raspberry Pi.<\/p>\n<h2>Connecting the Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module to a Raspberry Pi<\/h2>\n<p>Since the Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module comes with the 15-Pin FFC ribbon, we can readily connect it to the Camera Serial Interface on Raspberry Pi 2\/3\/4 Model A+\/B\/B+. If you are using a Raspberry Pi 2\/3\/4, <a href=\"http:\/\/connect the Raspberry Pi Camera Module to Raspberry Pi 2 or Raspberry Pi 3\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this is how you can connect the camera to your Raspberry Pi<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>However, if you are connecting your Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module to a Raspberry Pi Zero or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/why-buy-the-raspberry-pi-zero-w\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pi Zero W<\/a>, you will need to buy a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Makerfocus-Raspberry-Camera-Cable-Ribbon\/dp\/B0716TB6X3\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?crid=3GHGX6MD62TG6&linkCode=ll1&tag=clivsperswebs-20&linkId=6de852e813e28b234e39e6fd13ef3b64&language=en_US\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pi Zero Ribbon Cable Adapter<\/a>. When you have the Pi Zero Ribbon Cable Adapter, you can then connect your camera by following the instructions mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/connect-raspberry-pi-camera-module-raspberry-pi-zero-w-official-case\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how to connect Raspberry Pi camera module to Raspberry Pi Zero W and the official case<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Setting up an operating system and enabling the Raspberry Pi Camera on your operating system<\/h2>\n<p>Once you have connected the Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module to a Raspberry Pi, the next step is to setup an operating system like Raspbian to run your Pi. After you had done so, you will also need to enable the Raspberry Pi Camera on your operating system <\/p>\n<h2>Enabling Raspberry Pi Camera on Raspbian Buster<\/h2>\n<p>For example, suppose that you had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/how-to-setup-raspbian-buster-for-your-raspberry-pi-4-model-b\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">setup Raspbian Buster on a Raspberry Pi 4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When you boot into Raspbian Buster, click on the Raspberry Pi icon at the top left corner and navigate to <strong>Preferences<\/strong> -> <strong>Raspberry Pi Configuration<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"826\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Finding-Raspberry-Pi-Configuration-in-Raspbian-Buster-20190710.gif\" alt=\"Finding Raspberry Pi Configuration in Raspbian Buster 20190710\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1788\" \/>.<\/p>\n<p>Once the <strong>Raspberry Pi Configuration<\/strong> program starts, select the <strong>Interfaces<\/strong> tab. In the Interfaces tab, select the <strong>Enable<\/strong> option for the camera and click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"521\" height=\"468\" src=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Raspberry-Pi-Configuration-Interfaces-tab-on-Raspbian-Buster-20191007-with-Camera-being-enabled.gif\" alt=\"Raspberry Pi Configuration Interfaces tab on Raspbian Buster 20191007 with Camera being enabled\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1789\" \/>.<\/p>\n<p>After you had done so, Raspberry Pi Configurations will prompt you to restart your system:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"521\" height=\"468\" src=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Raspberry-Pi-Configuration-on-Raspbian-Buster-20191007-prompting-for-reboot.gif\" alt=\"Raspberry Pi Configuration on Raspbian Buster 20191007 prompting for reboot\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1790\" \/>.<\/p>\n<p>When you see that prompt, click <strong>Yes<\/strong> to reboot your Raspberry Pi.<\/p>\n<p>Once your Raspberry Pi had rebooted, you may see the IR LED bulbs light up if the light sensors on the IR LED Board does not sense that the environment is not bright enough:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Raspberry-Pi-4-Model-B-with-Waveshare-Raspberry-Pi-Infrared-Module-enabled-20191007.jpg\" alt=\"Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with Waveshare Raspberry Pi Infrared Module enabled 20191007\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1787\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Testing out your Raspberry Pi Infrared Camera Module on Raspbian Buster<\/h2>\n<p>At this point in time, you can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/documentation\/usage\/camera\/raspicam\/raspistill.md\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><code>raspistill<\/code> command line tool<\/a> to test out your camera. <\/p>\n<p>First, start a terminal program by clicking the terminal icon at the top:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"363\" height=\"171\" src=\"https:\/\/www.techcoil.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Raspbian-Buster-20190710-taskbar-with-terminal-program-icon-hovered.gif\" alt=\"Raspbian Buster 20190710 taskbar with terminal program icon hovered\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1712\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After your terminal program loads up, enter the following command to take a picture:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: bash; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">\r\nraspistill -o test-image.jpg\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>When you do so, you should see a preview window that shows the camera feed.
